Ivan Milat: 1989-1992.

He is known as Australia's worst serial killer. He at least killed seven backpackers in a heinous way, torturing and sexually molesting them, leaving them naked, in awkward positions that had some secret meaning to him, and often times mutilated in the Belango Forest, near south Sydney. Milat had a very hard childhood, his first terrifying encounter with death was when his sister died in a car accident. This terrible accident happened near Ivan’s home, where he rushed to help her but it was too late. This left a deep psychological impact on Ivan and later manifests this frustration with his anger and the way he kills and places his victims. When he was a teenager, he quickly became obsessed over his body image, living in a fantasy type of world. He quickly began taking interest in guns, which became more of an obsession for Ivan. He would usually go and shoot by himself, to escape form psychological abuse. His brothers would often be scared of Ivan an his twisted fantasies he would express to them, he said he wanted to be a “Big League Criminal”, which leads him to petty theft and a really bad reputation. He meets his soon to be ex-wife Karen, who left him in a few months because of this uncontrollable anger and the need to be in control all the time. Milat decides to set her parents house on fire and punches her repeatedly, this is where he felt the high he had been searching for this whole time. Six months later after the divorce, the first two victims of Ivan Milat died. He finally got arrested after one of his soon to be victims could escape and get help, Milat admits to wanting to terrorize and make his victims suffer the most that he could make them suffer. 

Ivan Milat had eight out of thirteen characteristics that are listed in the FBI’s high risk register:

 

  • Alcohol abuse.

  • Substance abuse.

  • Psychiatric history.

  • Criminal history.

  • Sexual History.

  • Psychological abuse.

  • Physical abuse.

  •  Dominant father figure aligned with a negative relationship with male caretaker figures.

  •  Negative relationships with both biological mother or adoptive mother.

  •  Treated unfairly.

  •  Head trauma.

  •  Demon seed.
