Psychology Behind Ivan Milat

Nature vs. Nurture

The way a Ivan Milat was nurtured, is basically going to be manifested in the way he acts the rest of his lives, the way he communicates and the way he relate to other human beings, trying to fit into a world that has been very cruel to them. Ivan Milat, once rejected, abused or neglected in their childhood begin to create a very unstable way of thinking and “fitting in this world”, unsure of he was going to get through puberty in a sane manner.  I am positive Ivan Milat was more influenced by nature than by nurture. Apart from his psychological disorders, Ivan Milet has a “rare genetic disorder”, which is basically an extra Y chromosome in men. XYY children, usually tend to be very problematic and distracted, as well as being intolerant and having violent/sexual outbursts. It is a well known fact that many people, are born to kill.

Defense Mechanisms

DENIAL
Ivan Milat had to utilize defense mechanisms to survive all the pressure he was put into when captured. A defense mechanism is created by the ego to defend ourselves from unpleasant thoughts. Ivan, had a rough life, he had murdered people, and eventhough it was his desicion, he somehow, flet bad about ir. He used Denial to relief the pressure he had on him. Ivan Milat often refused to accept that he killed pople. He looked every way possible for him to find an explanation to his actions.

Dehumanization

It is clear that Ivan Milat dehumanized people. Just with the fact that he killed inocent people he is dehumanizing others. Adding to this, He played with them as if they were toys. Ivan  played sexually with his victims. He also left  naked them, and  in awkward positions. Dehumanization is when we treat other person or a group of people as if they are less than us. It is evident that Ivan felt superiority over others when playing in a cruel way with people.

Psychological phases of development

Ivan Milat, was very related to the Psychological phases of development, when he killed people, he found an interesting unknown pleassure on abusing of his victims he was characterized to his victioms by sexually molesting them, leaving them naked, in awkward positions that had some secret meaning to him.

Social Learning Theory

Ivan grew up in a Yugoslav family of 14 siblings. Ivan’s father was a migrant who never had any time for his family. Ivan worked for as a wharf labourer and the family, lived in a weatherboard cottage with dirt floor. A few years later the family then upgraded from the cottage to a shed, where all the children slept on mattresses. Ivan’s father was said to be a very quiet man, however his aggression reach insanely high levels when the children misbehaved.
In relation to this story, Ivan was born and raised with this very fingerprint. Does Ivan was born as criminal? The environmental factors that have been identified in Milat’s upbringing and childhood resembles the exact statistics previously discussed. Milat’s family resided in a low socio-economic residency, their family had an extremely low household income, his father was employed as a labourer and displayed aggressive behaviours towards his children. The family was very much considered dysfunctional, therefore indicating that delinquent behaviour was on the rise, typically due to the environmental and social determinants he was faced with at such a young age.
